CARTEL8791.COM Minnesota Twins Season Ticket Group

Overview

CARTEL8791.COM is the season ticket group name for a set of baseball fans sharing 4 season tickets at Target Field on an ongoing basis. Seats are in "home plate terrace" section 218, row 2, seats 13-16.  For more information on the seats, see photos and diagrams (PHOTO GALLERY, TARGET FIELD album); see description of seats in the FAQ section below.

Ideally, the group continues for many years to come, with little member turnover.  It's a way to share in the benefits of season ticket ownership without a commitment in time and money to a full season.

2012 Draft Lottery Events

Like last year, we will use "draft lottery events" during the regular season to determine draft lottery position for next year. There is one twist this year: we will SKIP a few games. How many games? Depends on the score of the home opener. Total runs scored in the home opener determines how many games get skipped. If the final score is 5-2, we'll skip 7 games and start in the 8th.

When one of the draft lottery events happens AT TARGET FIELD, the member who originally drafted that game is assigned the next available lottery position. Here is the list of events:

Executed Draft Lottery Events

  • #1: Sean 4/22: 1st rainout
  • #2: Bill 4/23: 1st Danny Valencia home run, 7th inning
  • #3: Andy 5/24: 1st triple, Span 1st inning (also would have scored on 1st complete game <Blackburn>)
  • #4: Mike 6/11: 1st complete game (Baker) - [5/24 Blackburn didn't count]
  • #5: Chad 6/19: 1st Alexi Casilla home run
  • #6: Brian 9/27: 1st game in which a Twins batter hits a grand slam (Rene Tosoni)
  • #7: Bruce 9/28: best 2012 record of remaining 2 members (5-5)
  • #8: Roger 9/28: worst 2012 record of remaining 2 members (4-6)
  •

Available Draft Lottery Events
[* and events that occur but don't count, thereby remaining on the board]

  • Jim Thome home run #600
  • 1st Tsuyoshi Nishioka home run
  • 1st Twins win by 10 runs or more
  • 1st game in which a Twins batter hits three home runs
  • 1st game in which a Twins batter hits for the cycle
  • 1st game in which the Twins get 20 hits or more
  • 1st game in which the Twins get 20 runs or more
  • 1st game in which a Twins batter gets 5 hits or more (which we'll call "doing a Puckett")
  • 1st inside-the-park homerun by a Twins batter
  • 1st walk-off homerun by a Twins hitter
Order of event priority and tie-breakers are the same as last year (listed after the 2011 regular season schedule below).

2011 Draft Position

For the 2011 season, draft lottery position were determined based on when various draft lottery events occur at Target Field during the 2010 season (not counting the home opener).  When one of the events happens, the member who originally drafted that game is assigned the next available lottery position. Here is the list of events:

Available Draft Lottery Events   [and events that happen but don't count, remaining on the board]

  • First game in which any Twins batter hits three home runs
  • First game in which any Twins batter hits a grand slam
  • First game in which any Twins batter hits for the cycle
  • First Twins triple play

* In the event of a simultaneous occurrence (e.g., JJ Hardy hits a walk-off HR as his 1st HR), the first event listed takes priority, the others remain in play

Executed Draft Lottery Events
  • #1: First Thome home run - Chad 4/17, (first triple and first O-Hud home run also occurred in the same game, but by rule, remain on the board)
  • #2: First triple by any Twins batter - Bill 4/21 (Michael Cuddyer, 8th inning)
  • #3: First complete game pitched (Twins pitcher) - Brad 5/4 (Blackburn)
  • #4: First rainout - Andy 5/7
  • #5: First Twins win by 10 or more runs - Bruce 5/21 (15-3 Twins over Brewers)
  • #6: First O-Hud home run - Brian 5/29
  • #7: First game in which any Twins batter hits two home runs - Mike 7/3 (Thome #573 & 574)
[Kubel did it 5/27, didn't count because the holder of the game had already established a spot]
  • #8: By default, Roger gets the 8-spot!

Draft lottery events that occurred after they didn't matter...
  • First game in which any Twins batter hits a walk-off home run (Jim Thome 8/17)
  • First Danny Valencia  home run (8/22)
  • First JJ Hardy home run (9/8)

When any one of these events occurs, the member who originally drafted the game is assigned the next available draft lottery position. Example - in the 4/14 game, Jason Kubel hits a home run in the 2nd inning, Denard Span hits a triple in the 6th inning, and Kubel hits another dinger in the 8th. The first draft lottery event to occur was Span's triple. Mike originally drafted this game, so Mike is assigned the #1 draft lottery position and "first triple" is off the board. Kubel's 2-dinger day doesn't matter, since a lottery event already occurred in the game. Brian drafted the 4/15 game - if one of the other draft lottery events occurs during that game, Brian gets the #2 draft lottery position.  And so on through the year. If the draft lottery isn't settled by the end of the regular season, ties among any remaining members will be handled by

1) Overall record for your 10 drafted games
2) 2011 pronostication (how many regular season Twins wins in 2011)
3) If a tie still remains, we'll bust out
random.org again!

Draft lottery events only apply if the member who drafted that game has not yet been assigned a 2011 draft lottery position. In the example above, Mike was assigned the #1 spot in his first game, so any events that occur during his remaining 9 games are simply ignored and they remain on the board

As in 2010, members will use their draft lottery position to select their actual draft position. For example, Mike won the #1 draft lottery position, he can choose any of the 8 draft positions. Selection of 2011 draft positions happens after the 2011 home schedule is released.

Basic membership rules

  • A full share is 10 games, 4 seats.  Home opener allocation will be handled separately (see home opener allocation).
  • Each share for 2010 is $1,160 (10 x 4 x $29) plus $10 per game (per GAME, not per ticket) for the premium games. A normal season has 7-10 "premium games" (Yankees, Red Sox, maybe the Cubs). The premium game surcharge helps to offset miscellaneous expenses (domain name, postage, draft day beer, etc.); also reflects the market value of the premium games.
  • Games to be allocated "fantasy-football-draft style", probably late January / early February.  Draft rotation established up front (maybe at random year 1, then more creatively in subsequent years). Draft proceeds 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-1-2-3-4-5 etc.  Member 1 picks a game, then member 2, member 3, etc. until all games are allocated.  Tickets will be distributed within a week or so after they are received in the spring.
  • After the allocation, members are  allowed (no, make that encouraged!) to trade pairs to games (e.g., keep all 4 tickets for 5 of your games, trade 1 pair to each of the other 5 games for a pair to another game with another cartel member). If you trade into a premium game, please include $5 to cover half of the premium surcharge.
  • The "Keep It Inside" Guideline
The tickets to the games you drew are yours - you're free to do anything you want with them. But you are encouraged to "keep it inside".  Offer up anything you don't want or can't use within the group before selling them on the outside, especially when it comes to the postseason. It's a guideline that I believe will serve us well.
  • Home Opener Allocation
Tickets for the home opener each year are allotted on a PAIR basis, following a permanent rotation based on order of entry into the group. Each year, two members of the group will be able to buy a pair for the home opener. Here is the schedule:
    - 2010      Bill and Chad
    - 2011 Andy and Roger
    - 2012 Mike and Brian
    - 2013 Brad and Bruce
    - 2014 Bill and Chad (and so on....)
If a member drops out, we will "left-shift" everyone by one slot and the new member will go to the end of the rotation.
  • Post-season Allocation
Tickets for the postseason (I hope we have to worry about it every year!) are allotted on a PAIR basis, following a permanent rotation. In past years, season ticket holders have been allowed to buy additional tickets up to twice the number of their regular seats. If this policy continues, that means that we will be able to buy 12 seats for each postseason game - our 4 seats in section 218 plus 8 elsewhere.  Presuming that policy continues, here is an example of post-season allocation assuming 6 home games are played (Twins win ALDS 3-0 with the 1st 2 games on the road; then win ALCS 4-1 playing 3 of them at home; then win the world series in 4 straight with games 1 & 2 at home  [hey, it's my example, I'll make it up any way I want!!]):

NOTE: any playoff games necessary to determine division championship (e.g., another "game 163") will be treated as postseason games for ticket allocation purposes.

Postseason Schedule

Please note that this schedule is based on all possible games being played. If for example 2011 ALDS home game 3 is not played, then Brian and Sean are assigned ALCS home game 1.

FAQ

Q. Describe the seats.

A. I call these the best “lunch bucket tickets” in the place. If I were Warren Buffett or Bill Gates,
would I be closer to the plate? Duh…. But that’s not my lot in life, so I had to do the best I could
on a budget, and I think I scored. We’re in “home plate terrace”, section 218, row 2, four seats
on the aisle. If you’ve explored the seating charts, you know that this section is at the front of the
top level. Once you reach the top concourse (which is open and has a view of the field all the way
around) you go one of two ways – up 12-15 steps to row 1 of the 300’s section, or DOWN to the
200’s section. (Similar to the club level at Xcel Energy Center, where you go down a few rows to
reach your seats.) See the cross-section" photo under PHOTO GALLERY, TARGET FIELD ALBUM.

Section 218 only has 4 rows, and row two is only 16 seats wide. Should be extremely easy access.
We’re behind home plate, a little toward the 3rd base side. We should be looking almost straight
down the 1st baseline, with the city skyline in the background. There’s not a $29 seat closer to
home plate in the place.

Q. Is there still room in the group?

A. No, we're filled up for 2010. I have one or two other folks that have expressed an interest, and
we'll probably find a way to formally track them in the "on deck circle", ready to jump in when a
full share comes available.

Q. What if I get in and then want out after year 1?

A. No problem! We'll go to the on deck circle, and beyond if needed. Each commitment is just for 1
year, but being a member also reserves your spot for next year if you want to continue. We're
optimistic that ticket demand is going to be very strong for years - all signs indicate that
Target Field will be every bit as desirable a venue for baseball as Xcel Energy Center has
proven to be for hockey.

Q. What about the post-season?

A. See the Post-season Allocation rule above.

Q. What if 4 seats doesn't work very well for me, but 2 seats does?

A. All group members for 2010 are in on a 10 game, 4 seat basis. But all are welcome and
encouraged to swap pairs. It's conceivable that a member could end up with 2 seats to
20 games by doing enough trading.

Q. Any more photos or diagrams?

A. Definitely!  One of the most interesting views is a "cross-section" diagram of the ballpark. It
shows the position of the home plate terrace section and how it relates to the upper deck. You
can see this view and others on this site - go to PHOTO GALLERY, and select the TARGET FIELD
album.
